I have lost my rhythm and routine for posting blogs. Did I ever have it?.

There are so many distractions, and time goes by so quickly. I believe though, that it is important to keep up with it however erratic my posts might be. With a bit of discipline and determination I will get there (I will never give up trying). My exhibition was a great success. I was pleased with the overall layout of the work that I displayed. It came together and showed a strength which I had not realized was present in my work. I saw some pieces differently and they took on a whole new meaning in the venue that was the exhibition space. I have a few photos to share below.

The floor in the photo above had a collection of three pieces entitled I am not my hair, I explored the ideas of traditional beauty and how sometimes you are stereotyped based purely on how you look. My inspiration was drawn from reactions to my own hairstyle. They were behind glass so did not photograph well. They were positioned on the yellow wall.

It has been a long time since I sat down to write a post. Of course I have thought about doing it and have on many occasions made attempts to write something but I never managed it until now.

So much has happened since last June, It has been a very busy ten months. There are two main opportunities which have arisen since my last blog, these have kept me away from blogging so that I could focus totally on my work. I know that many people are able to do both really well but I have not yet reached that status. I will continue trying.

In August last year I was invited to take part in an International Human Rights exhibition which is going to tour museums in the USA called Visioning Human Rights in the New Millennium. I spent the latter months of the year (2015) working on a quilt which I have now sent off for the exhibition. Each artist taking part was to select one of the articles of the UN Declaration of Human Rights and create a quilt 50 x 50 inch inspired by it. I chose the Human Rights law which states that no one should be a slave, below I have shown a detailed section of the quilt which I will reveal completely once the exhibition begins touring. My idea looked at underage marriage and how it equates to slavery. I will dedicate a blog to the quilt explaining my thoughts and symbolism.

I have also been working towards an exhibition at the Alison Richard Building, part of the University of Cambridge which will take place from 11 April to 1 July 2016. I have completed all preparation of my work for this and it will be displayed next week. This exhibition is an important one for me as I have been to many exhibitions at the ARB over the years and have always enjoyed the space, the building and the atmosphere. I feel really privileged to be a part of this and have always wanted to have my work shown there.

I will continue trying to perfect my craft, sharing my knowledge with others and being true to myself.

I have been invited to exhibit next month at The The Plough Gallery in Shrepreth. The exhibition will be called Out of Africa and Deanna Tyson who is curating the event will also be exhibiting. I have created new work for this and have a few new pieces in progress. The piece below is one of my new paintings on canvas.

There is a vast difference in size, the colours are different, and the medium is too but the similarities are evident and very clear. This is why I enjoy making art, the possibilities are endless.

So my plan of sharing the work as I create went out the window.Unfortunately, I still have not learnt my lesson, as I have continued taking photos with my phone when in my studio because my proper camera is not ever with me at the time, and I am always losing my phone.

One of the most recent pieces that I have been working on can be seen in the following series of photos (taken with my phone). I started off with a drawing of a young female which I had done a while ago, I enlarged it, changed her hair and transferred the drawing onto Egyptian cotton fabric.Having done some research before, I had an idea of what I wanted this piece to say,

I then began painting the skin tone and creating a 70's inspired Afro hairstyle which is supposed to be my way of connecting my ideas of old and new (knowing that the Afro has been around for a long time even though it is back in fashion again).

I then painted the face with patterns and colours inspired from an ngady mask also known as a Kuba royal mask thought to represent the hardships of women and traditionally worn by men.

I used the bold patterns and the rich earthy colours from the mask directly onto the face to connect them. My design also includes a halo in the shape of a question mark which encourages the viewer to question this fusion (African mask with the 70,s Afro on a young woman's face) with the strong contrasting patterns of her dress and the background. I often use the halo in my work to convey a Christian iconic connotation.

The contrasting fabric and background patterns, the painted mask patterns and the modern/ 70's hair are juxtaposed to create tension which can be interpreted as pulling these differences apart or fusing them together. This fusion of past and present can strengthen the image of the young woman depicted and can be representative of the modern young black woman.
I will post an image of the finished piece when I complete it. I have used Jacquard paints, Markal paint sticks and Madeira thread for this quilt.

My blog seems to have become a showcase for my children but this poem was written by my eldest daughter Krystal. She has had difficult times in her short life but still she manages to shine. She is talented and beautiful, a wonderful mother and brilliant loving daughter. I had to share this with as many people as possible. It is full of emotion and demonstrates her gift of writing.
If You do not see me smile
Or it doesn't reach my eyes
It's because I am exhausted
Of pretense, and all the lies.
I'm dreading to be asked "are you ok? What do you need"
I say "I'm fine" when deep inside I'm screaming "To be
freed".
I don't want sympathy or pity, I don't want to moan.
I don't want to be seen as weak or selfish, or to be told "you're not
alone."
I feel guilty for feeling out of control, it hurts so bad, how can this be?
It feels I can't breathe and it hurts to do so, I'm tired and angry at me.
Yes I can count my blessings
Why else do you think I'm still here?
It is why I keep on going, despite the anxiety, pain and fear.
"There are so many people who are worse off"
"There are others struggling too"
"Stop being so stupid, and just get on, the world doesn't revolve around
you."
Is that what everyone is thinking? I can't keep these thoughts at bay
People say "it could be worse", and it could be,
But it just doesn't feel that way.
I'm tired of wearing a mask, when behind it I'm falling apart.
But no one really wants to hear about my broken body, mind or heart.
So im sorry if you think me selfish,
melodramatic or rude,
I am not purposefully trying to be, I'm just trying to get through.
I miss my family, they are all far away and I miss the country I called home,
Despite being surrounded by people I often feel isolated and alone.
Most of the time I don't want to be seen, haggard by my mental health.
I don't ask for help because I don't want to be judged, I should just be able
to do it myself.
Don't assume what you do not see or understand, all You see is the tip of an
iceberg
The part submerged beneath the waves is not visible to the world.
My pregnancy isn't a burden, the pains aren't why I'm like this,
It offends me that anyone would assume that's my view when my last child is in
the arms of Jesus.
I love my children beyond all words, it is they who keep me alive.
They are my little heartbeats and without them I would surely die.
If I knew how to get better, don't you think that I would say?
I hate the darkness and the sadness, of course I don't want to be this way.
If you think I can just snap out of it then you clearly don't understand.
My invisible illness is not something that is controllable or planned.
You don't have to say anything, I don't expect to be understood.
I know those that care about me do whatever they can or could.
To those who've not judged, assumed or scorned me, I really cant thank you
enough.
Just treating me like a person and giving me comfort has helped me feel more
tough.
Mums at school you have been a support, and even being at my lowest low
Have never said anything other than kind words of encouragement and have helped
more than you could know.
I don't have the mental strength to talk about the depth of my feelings and
why,
I just needed to get some of my feelings out there, and thought this was worth
a try.
I'm not sure if anyone will read it, I don't know how they'll react if they do.
I'm not usually able to express feelings so personal through and through.
It's unlikely I will say anything more, as I feel vulnerable and exposed,
But I know that I will only get much worse if I keep completely closed<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;"> Sandra Scott Textile Artisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14336991983591397604noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8735311686805458616.post-38287571658998419702015-01-06T17:54:00.001+00:002015-01-09T11:03:43.788+00:00Adam is twenty three!

Today my son Adam turned twenty three. I cannot believe that he has reached that age and that I have been so privileged to have played a part in his development into a lovely young man. It is an absolute pleasure to have seen him grow in confidence from a shy, quiet, young, boy into the sensitive young man that he has become. He is not as quiet now.

I am proud of his progress at University where he is studying Architecture. His work inspires me and although he is a perfectionist (like his father) and is never satisfied with his results his work is outstanding, I am excited by his ideas and the quality of the designs he creates. I have even commissioned a new studio when he has finished his studies, not to mention a house in the Caribbean. I am truly honoured to call him my son and to have him in my life. As much as he would not like to admit it he is a lot like me. The picture above shows him with his really lovely girlfriend, Becki, she brings out the best in him.

It was an exciting event to see the really high quality prints with their professionally finished black frames. Also amazing was the spot on colour matching, exquisite detail of the stitching and the overall gallery quality effect that was achieved. We were all pleasantly impressed.
It is an excellent opportunity for me. Their combined experience, knowledge and brilliant ideas means that I am in good hands when it comes to getting the advice, guidance and support needed to create a successful business.

It's depressing. Pick Black Berries instead'
Summer came and went with it's usual fun in the sun days and family togetherness. It seemed to go by too quickly and was soon gone leaving me wondering where it went. I spent some time in my studio painting, stitching and forgetting to keep a record of my progress (smile). I tried painting birds as I have noticed that many artists seem to be inspired by them and I had never thought of doing them before so I gave it a try and one result can be seen below.
In the last couple of months I have also been meeting with Adrian Ashmore and Ashley Meggitt who are both helping me with the business aspect of my work. The results of which I will share as things progress. Both are computer experts, Adrian is also a professional photographer and Ashley an accomplished writer and musician. These meetings have resulted in professional photographs of my work taken, a business plan drawn up and we are working on a few other areas to get the project on it's feet. I am really excited, all will be revealed later.

Today is also the 28th day of October and this month is celebrated as Black History month in the UK. Each year since 2013 the month of October has been designated as Black History month but very rarely, if ever, do I hear any mention of it, especially in Cambridge where I live. I set about looking into this. I understand that the black community in Cambridge is rather small but my understanding of the reason for black history month has nothing to do with Slavery or past injustice. In my search for information I came across a rather interesting article in the Guardian written by Hugh Muir in 2013 it was called "Forget Black History Month. It's depressing pick Black berries instead" When I read it I realized how important it was to make a personal statement about this with my little voice. It is important to share the knowledge about ethnic minorities who play positive roles in our communities, this is one of the reasons why I work with young people in schools, I believe that my work in schools especially where there are few or no minorities makes a strong statement and will help change the misunderstandings, stereotypical ideas and discrimination of racism. Through my love and passion for art I hope to build bridges, share ideas and knowledge all for a better world.
October is very important as it is also Breast Cancer Awareness month.
I was really into making these dolls about 12 years ago and on seeing them again I became excited and re-inspired. I feel that these pieces of art/sculptures made a strong statement about ideal beauty and at the time I received positive feedback from my contemporaries.
I have always enjoyed working in three dimensions and with clay, quite often I have a strong desire to create larger than life sculptures still; but of course I am unable to do so because of restrictions of space, materials and time. I still love the feel of clay and the ability to manipulate it into a satisfying shapes which can so easily convey much emotion and expression. I find this very rewarding even when working with children. Knowing all of this I thought I would share a few of my sculptural dolls here with you, please look at my website to see more. I am still working on it to provide an even better experience for my viewers.

I know that my grieving process has been helped by my ability to create art, Quilts in particular. My quilts based on my mothers Alzheimer's have helped me to deal with my feelings about it, how it affected my mother, my family and myself. I have recently finished yet another quilt from the very last photograph I took of her. Please have a look at the stages of this quilt's development below.
First, I cropped the photograph to give the effect of her peering around the door. She always did this in a playful manner when she was in prime health, it gives a glimpse of her sense of humour, she would often sneak up and stand peering from the corner of a doorway, sometimes causing a loud squeal (from me) when I realised she had been watching me for ages. I now do this to my children and sometimes get similar reactions (squeals and laughter).
Although her image is not a laughing happy one with no smile or twinkle in her eye, in essence it is still her. I am instead showing an image of someone (my mother) peering out, trapped trying to escape, a total contrast to how this scene would have played out when she was well, (before Alzheimer's took her). The forever lost expression of Alzheimer is evident in this.

To begin with I cropped the photo, enlarged it and pinned it onto the wall of my studio (Photo 1). I sometimes prefer to paint this way. I am trying to document and share my creative process by showing the development of my work so expect to see more of this in my blogs.
For this piece I began on printed yellow fabric instead of my own hand dyed fabric as an experiment, to see if this manufactured fabric would affect the end result.
Thank you to everyone who was able to visit the exhibition last weekend, it continues for a month and can be viewed by appointment only.

It was an extremely pleasant and rewarding event. Thank you to Claire Rudin who I exhibited with, her Batiks were brilliant, mostly flowers in vibrant colours, some of these reminded me of Claude Monet's impressionist paintings. Julie and Andrew the owners of Make Gallery were also fantastic hosts and very helpful, they were both very relaxed, this helped calm me down a bit as I found it all a bit daunting. The comments by those who attended were positive and now I have to believe that David does not say that my work is "good" because he has to (smile).

It was really lovely to see many faces I knew from my stint teaching at Kings College School. It was also wonderful to have family and close friends who came along at short notice.

I know that I am not unlike many other artist when I say that I am my own worst critic but with that in mind, I know that my next exhibition and my subsequent work will be of an even higher standard. as I am constantly striving to be the best that I can be in all aspects of my life. I still have a long way to go.

This is the second video in my project which demonstrates how I sometimes create a quilt from an idea in my sketch pad to fabric and finally to the machine for quilting. It shows how I used the first painting as a template to develop the design. Using tracing paper, I add details to the figure and background. For my background I have used a commercially printed fabric instead of my own hand dyed cottons.
I have always been inspired by the work of Gustave Klimt and in this piece I have incorporated elements inspired by the background pattern used in his works Expectations and Fulfilment. I realised that these patterns are similar to the Rams horn symbol used in Ghana and other regions of Africa. The Rams horn is a symbol of Humility, Excellence, Wisdom and Knowledge as mentioned in The book The Royal Arts of Africa by Suzanne Preston Blier. I combined these elements and the final result can be seen below.

The completed quilt shows a female whose facial expression quietly displays the qualities of the Rams Horn symbol tattooed on her neck. Her hair evolves into a crown like halo which elevates her to a saintly presence.Sandra Scott Textile Artisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14336991983591397604noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8735311686805458616.post-74896446246388527622014-04-24T08:11:00.000+01:002014-05-11T16:41:22.005+01:00 Portrait of a young woman

This is the second video which I have posted on my blog and the process was done in my sketch pad (A3) using water soluble colours.

This video shows how my idea develops from a simple outlined drawing inspired by colours I liked from another image, This is the first stage of a process which resulted in a small quilt. I have divided the film into two parts, the fist bit is done on paper and then the same image is transferred to fabric. The final quilt will show elements which are inspired by Klimt and Ghanaian symbols.

Look out for Part 2 when I transfer the image to fabric, develop the design and quilt it.

She came with Eve, Nadia, Seren, her three best friends, they call themselves "The Fantastic Four" and Mum Jane. The girls were delightful and eager to try things out, they jumped in with both feet quietly confident in their approach to the project. We made textile books using painted Bondaweb and muslin as well as experimenting with Gesso. They had not used Gesso before and it became the source of many moments of laughter as they could not remember the name of this white chalky substance which Eve referred to as "white stuff". There were times when they whispered quietly and times especially at lunch when they relaxed and felt more at home, sharing their stories about siblings and school. I discovered that they were very creative and had their own stash of art materials including oil and chalk pastels, they did not shy away from sewing and added wonderful buttons to the surfaces that they had created. Ruby mentioned impressively her interest in vintage fashion and her love of art. Overall they were engaged with the task at hand and completed beautiful books by the end, Mum Jane shone through too and demonstrated her own skills during the process.
Of course there is always more that I would have liked to have shared with them but time always goes too quickly when having fun. I very much hope that that the experience was one which inspires them to continue their exploration of art.
It was really a pleasure to have had them in my studio. See their amazing books in the photo above.
Yesterday we took Melissa to University. She is truly an inspiration to me. She is smart, brave and not afraid to speak out loudly about what she thinks is right and believes in. She is hardworking and caring, and I often say that I want to be like her "when I grow up" I say this because she seems to be far more mature for her 18 almost 19 years of age than I will ever be even after living for half a century. I am proud of her and all that she has accomplished especially after a difficult year. She achieved top grades in History, Art, English literature and her Extended project.

This photo shows her true personality which has not changed over the years, her cheeky smile, strong fashion sense (pink Barbie watch) white bows in her hair and trademark glasses.

When she was really little she spoke with an extremely hoarse voice, because she shouted to be heard. She had to fight for attention to compete with her two older siblings Krystal the violin player and ballet dancer, Adam my only son who loved his dinosaurs, action figures and running around at top speed with a football. She wanted to be heard, and she shouted. Then after six years of being the baby in the family, Selena came along the cute baby

"Perfect Peter she called her" I smile when I remember this as Melissa would often say that Selena was Perfect Peter and she was Horrid Henry, she still says this to this day. Mel is not at all horrid, just determined.

Selena arrived and took all the perks of being the youngest. Melissa continued to shout, is still shouting to be heard, but this time with a confidence and power which I can only admire. She is certainly going to leave a mark in this world and I can only look on with pride while she does it. I will miss her advice, friendship, support and encouragement. On a lighter note, she took all her shoes so my wardrobe has shrunk.

This has been easier said than done as Selena has taken over where Melissa left off and she now spends quite a bit of her time there. So far this summer she has created many exciting things including a Duvet cover set. I bought her a plain white one and she enlarged an image from A4 size paper to fit it. She pinned it to a wall in my studio and with great accuracy and ease drew it onto the Duvet cover and pillow.

She is very creative and I can't wait to see how her work develops as she begins to prepare for her GCSE's.
Earlier this month I created a design from a photograph of Mel taken about a year ago, I played around with the image on photo shop and ended up with a posturized image (figure1) which I then translated onto fabric and have shown below (figure 2 ).

(figure 1)

For this quilt I have used tie dyed fabric for the background (Mel dyed this) in combination with commercial fabrics to complete the rest of the design. This has been a technique which I have wanted to try for ages and as with any new process I have encountered a few challenges but I learn as I make mistakes. I intend to add quite a bit of free machine stitching next to add texture and some tonal interest and finally I will quilt the piece. In my next post I will include more images showing the development of this.
I will also continue my development of the ideas mentioned in the last post and show how I get along with these as well.

It was brief but refreshing and I have come back to my studio a bit more excited than I have been for a while. I have also been able to visit and attend a workshop and exhibition with my daughter Selena at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. The workshop was given by Kandace Chimbiri a British / Barbadian author and historian. She is truly inspirational and with a soft spoken voice delivered the information to the children taking part in an interesting and exciting way. Selena and her friend Miriam really enjoyed themselves. I highly recommend her book as an excellent source of information as I am sure most people would not realise that there is so much to learn about the afro comb.
I was unable to get to the Festival of Quilts regrettably but I will try for the knitting and stitching show in a few months. Yesterday I began looking through some of my older sketch pads for inspiration and discovered a collage with my oldest daughter Krystal dancing.

I found these movements really interesting and thought that maybe I could create more work inspired by them, it was as if I was seeing the piece with different eyes. As well as this collage I found a sketch dated 2006 which I thought I could use. I gave this collage a name " dancing to our song with my ancestors" as the larger female figures looming in the coloured background seem strong and overpowering. In addition to this I also enjoyed seeing the sketches and love the way that I managed to capture the movement. I will use these as starting points for new work.
This project included the children from Thongsley Primary School in Huntingdon, the staff and their parents. They all came together to create wonderful colourful costumes Mel, Ricki and I helped them to create tie - dye bandannas, bright, sparkly headdresses, colourful cardboard tabbards and fabulous strip skirts. A delightful parade accompanied a performance of their own music taught and led by talented musician, Jo.
In addition to this and with Ricki's supervision they also made the absolutely handsome male giant puppet seen modelling with us. (Jo, Ricki, myself and Melissa, Gorgeous George standing elegantly behind). George the Giant! What a cutie!! The photo was taken by Viv Peters the director.
I have not been actively following other blogs either. Why? Of the many reasons the one that comes to mind more readily is that maybe it was a necessary process for me to clear my mind- almost a detoxification of sorts. I am now ready to start again with fresh inspiration. All of the work which I have done recently with schools, exhibitions visited and general everyday living has played a role in my period of reflection. I believe that like many people who fast for religious and spiritual reasons which help them to be better able to appreciate all that they have: I have with my "fasting from the Internet" a better appreciation of it and a greater desire to be a part of all that happens within it.
I have had a birthday an anniversary and some events which I would rather not have experienced but I am still here ready to continue; To be, to give and to share all that I can with the world.

Last weekend I spent Saturday working with a group of wonderful ladies sharing some techniques used to Batik fabric and paper. It was an inspiring day, the only complaint was that the art room was way too hot. It was quite mild outside and we were using hot wax with the heating on, of course there was little hope for a breeze even with the doors propped open.
An entire day is never enough time for workshops like this especially when there is a strong feeling of excitement and enthusiasm in the room. With just a 30 minute lunch break we were still rushing to finish samples towards the end of the session. Fortunately I did take my camera But I was only able to take photos of some of the work done. Throughout the day I kept on saying out loud to remind myself (lol) that I must take photos, but with so much to do in so little time when I finally took the camera out their work had been put away. These kind ladies stopped clearing up to unpack their best pieces so that I could get a few pictures. At this point I had to climb onto a tall stool and then with one leg perched on the table and the other on the stool, I took these photos which, do not really show the delicate quality of line and the fabulous colours they achieved but they will give an idea.
This you tube clip is a funny book review of Kyra Hicks book Martha Ann's Quilt for Queen Victoria.

The book is great and comes highly recommended by my daughter Selena age 12. She has written a review of it in her reading diary for school. Thought I would share it.
